Panchang FAQs

What is Panchang?

Panchang (पंचांग) is the Hindu almanac. It describes each day through five limbs — Tithi (lunar day), Vaar (weekday), Nakshatra (lunar mansion), Yoga and Karana — and is used to choose auspicious times (muhurat) for puja, travel, griha pravesh, marriage and new beginnings.

What is Rahu Kaal and what should I avoid?

Rahu Kaal is a period of about 90 minutes each day ruled by Rahu. It is traditionally avoided for starting new work, journeys, purchases and ceremonies. Its time changes with the weekday and with your city’s sunrise and sunset.

What is Abhijit Muhurat?

Abhijit Muhurat is the eighth muhurat of the day, centred on local noon and lasting about 48 minutes. It is considered auspicious for almost any work, except on Wednesdays.

What is Brahma Muhurat?

Brahma Muhurat is the period of about 96 minutes ending 48 minutes before sunrise. It is the traditional time for meditation, prayer and study.

Why are Panchang timings different in each city?

Every muhurat is measured from local sunrise and sunset, which move with latitude and longitude. Kolkata sees the sun about 45 minutes before Mumbai, so the same Rahu Kaal or muhurat falls at a different clock time. That is why this page computes each city separately.
